Nearly 1,000 lightning strikes electrified the Sierra Nevada mountain range and western Nevada over a 12-hour period as an unstable weather system pounded the region with rain and slush on Thursday.
"In February, we don't usually get lightning like this. It's pretty rare," said Mark Deutschendorf, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno. An average winter storm in the Sierra sees less than 100 lightning strikes, if any, he said.
