SFGATE: Heavy snow closes I-80 in Sierra, wreaks havoc on Tahoe travel

Heavy snow closes I-80 in Sierra, wreaks havoc on Tahoe travel Published on January 07, 2019 at 07:43AM by By Gwendolyn Wu When Katja Nelson traveled to Lake Tahoe this weekend, she expected a white wedding, not whiteout conditions. What normally would be a four-hour drive back to San Francisco turned into a daylong mess for the Airtable product manager and her boyfriend. The couple had traveled up to the Sierra for a friend’s wedding. Their car inched along Interstate 80 in Donner Pass for several hours, hit patches of black ice and eventually slid off into a snowbank. “We were there for about an hour trying to get the car out but also worried about continuing to slide down the mountain without much control,” Nelson said.

SFGATE: Bay Area may dry out Monday before another storm hits

Bay Area may dry out Monday before another storm hits Published on January 07, 2019 at 10:50AM by By Michael Cabanatuan and Gwendolyn Wu A blustery day is in store Sunday with winds and rain in the Bay Area delaying or canceling flights out of San Francisco International Airport and up to 2 feet of snow in the Sierra making for difficult driving for folks returning from Lake Tahoe. National Weather Service meteorologists have issued a wind advisory, warning of winds of 25 to 25 miles per hour with gusts of up to 50 mph, for all of the Bay Area except the Santa Clara Valley. The advisory continues until 10 p.m. Sunday. Unlike Saturday, when strong winds were accompanied by only a modicum of precipitation — 0.11 of an inch in San Francisco, 0.47 of an inch in Santa Rosa — Sunday’s storm is expected to bring more significant rainfall.

SFGATE: Rapper's car among those trapped by Calif. mudslide

Rapper's car among those trapped by Calif. mudslide Published on January 07, 2019 at 11:24AM by LOS ANGELES (AP) — A powerful winter storm unleashed mudslides in Southern California wildfire burn areas and trapped motorists on a major highway, and the northern part of the state braced for more wet weather Sunday. Saturday's deluge loosened hillsides where a major blaze burned last year in and around Malibu, clogging the Pacific Coast Highway with mud and debris. A stretch of the scenic route northwest of Los Angeles was expected to remain closed in both directions until Monday while crews tow away stuck vehicles and clear lanes. No injuries were reported. The rapper Soulja Boy was among those whose cars were mired in the muck that was up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) deep in some areas.
