This so-called "atmospheric river" that first hit Thursday night and picked up force Friday afternoon is bringing impressive rainfall totals for April.

The storm began around 10 p.m. Thursday and was expected to continue through at least Saturday morning. As of early Friday, a little more than a half inch of rain had fallen in downtown San Francisco. Parts of the North Bay had seen closer to an inch. “It’s going to be a rain-soaker, if you will,” said Brian Mejia, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. Up to three inches of rain are expected in San Francisco with the coastal hills forecast for as much as six inches.
