SFGATE: Suspect wheeled into courtroom, appeared confused

Suspect wheeled into courtroom, appeared confused Published on April 28, 2018 at 08:05AM by By Melody Gutierrez SACRAMENTO — Joseph James DeAngelo, the man authorities say is the Golden State Killer who murdered 12 people and raped 45, is scheduled to stand before a judge in a Sacramento courthouse Friday to face charges in the decades-old crime spree. Police arrested DeAngelo, 72, on suspicion of two counts of murder stemming from the shooting deaths of a young couple near their Rancho Cordova home in 1978 as they walked their dog. He is being held without bail at Sacramento County Jail. Prosecutors in several other counties said they plan to file murder, rape, robbery and other charges that had been attributed to the East Area Rapist, Golden State Killer and the Original Nightstalker.

SFGATE: Serial killer search led to wrong man in 2017

Serial killer search led to wrong man in 2017 Published on April 28, 2018 at 09:49AM by By MICHAEL BALSAMO and JONATHAN J. COOPER, Associated Press SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Investigators who used a genealogical website to find the ex-policeman they believe is a shadowy serial killer and rapist who terrified California decades ago call the technique groundbreaking. But others say it raises troubling legal and privacy concerns for the millions of people who submit their DNA to such sites to discover their heritage. There aren't strong privacy laws to keep police from trolling ancestry site databases, said Steve Mercer, the chief attorney for the forensic division of the Maryland Office of the Public Defender.

SFGATE: A look at DNA testing that ID'd a suspected serial killer

A look at DNA testing that ID'd a suspected serial killer Published on April 27, 2018 at 11:45AM by By MICHAEL BALSAMO, Associated Press Joseph James DeAngelo, who authorities suspect is the so-called Golden State Killer responsible for at least a dozen murders and 50 rapes in the 1970s and 80s, was arrested more than three decades after the last killing with the help of information from an online genealogical site. Investigators haven't disclosed many key elements about how and why they took this very unusual step to find a suspect. Here's a look at the case and some of the questions surrounding it: HOW DID AUTHORITIES IDENTIFY HIM? The Sacramento County district attorney's office said Thursday DNA from one of the crime scenes was checked against genetic profiles from genealogical websites that collect DNA samples to help people learn about their family backgrounds.
