A small brush fire ignited this afternoon near the summit of Mount Diablo, and after jumping quickly on it with aircraft and ground crews, state firefighters appeared to have kept it from burning too close to the historic Summit Museum that sits at the top of the peak. The fire broke out around 3:30 p.m., according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, which dispatched crews because the 3,849 foot-mountain is within the Mt. Diablo State Park. It soon spread to about 4 acres, and investigators were trying to determine its cause.
