Sierra foothills dam pushed to near failure

Officials issued an emergency flood warning Wednesday afternoon for Moccasin Creek in rural Tuolumne County out of concern that a dam might fail. Moccasin Reservoir Dam, downstream of the small community of Moccasin in the Sierra foothills, is in danger of “imminent failure,” according to the National Weather Service. The dam is part of the Hetch Hetchy water system, which is owned and operated by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. San Francisco officials would not immediately comment on the problem, but authorities in the area expect damage to be limited.
